Finally, there is a way of building that solves many problems that have plagued the building industry for so many years. Structures built the traditional way with stud framed walls (wood or metal) and wall cavities filled with insulation are inherently weak, huge energy wasters and do not isolate sounds very well. Just recall pictures you've seen of houses framed in this manner going up against a tornado or hurricane. There's usually nothing left but the concrete. It only takes one look at your heating/cooling bill to see how much energy these types of structures consume.
Now there is a better way. Structures built with insulated concrete forms (ICF's) are the strongest, quietest, most energy efficient buildings on the planet. Period! You may have seen news footage of the 2004 tsuanmi or Hurricane Rita or Katrina that showed the only structures that survived were concrete buildings. Concrete structures last for hundreds of years. They are termite resistant, mold resistant, almost soundproof and can save you between 30 and 60 per cent on your heating and cooling costs. This is in addition to the priceless security of being in a solid concrete, steel reinforced structure that is virtually indestructible. If you are planning on building any type of structure, you owe it to yourself to research the many benefits of building with ICF's. Building with ICF's are a very wise investment, saving you thousands in reduced energy costs, lower insurance costs and a more comfortable, safer environment over your period of ownership.
Insulated concrete forms are exactly what their name implies. They are stay in place forms with 2 and 1/2 inches of stytrofoam on the inside and outside of the form filled with 4, 6, 8 or even more inches of steel reinforced concrete. The forms are held together by very strong PVC webs which are imbedded into the inner and outer styrofoam panels. The forms which we use are manufactured by BuildBlock and have these webs spaced every 6 inches for increased strength as well as providing more attachment options for siding, drywall, cabinets etc. Another benefit of this type of construction is the cost savings generated by combining so many aspects of the building into one process. Once the walls are poured, the mechanical tradesman such as electricians and plumbers can begin their part of the project. The insulation is already in place and as stated earlier, the forms have attachment webs built into each form at 6 inches on center for attaching exterior siding as well as drywall on the inside. Electricians and plumbers all find the ICF's to be easier to work with than traditional walls.
